HiGHmeducation: new CDSS training course has started in Göttingen

HiGHmed aims to promote actors in the field of digital transformation in German health care. We develop an innovative framework for teaching and training of health informatics and data science skills. Multiple newly established online courses are currently being implemented at the various academic partner sites. These online courses will be offered as an integrated vocational training programme in the near future, and will allow the awarding of HiGHmed professional certificates.

In October we started the course on Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) at the University Medical Center Göttingen. With medical and nursing decisions becoming increasingly complex, apps and computer programs hold great promise in supporting the decision-making process. The course takes a deep dive into the technical background of such algorithms, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of methods like Deep Learning and so-called “Artificial Intelligence”.

The course is part of the Göttingen Medical Informatics Master’s programme in a purely online interactive format. Over the course of 14 weeks, the participants learn to solve many tasks of varying complexity and discuss results and findings using online collaboration tools. Our HiGHmed project partner Ada Health GmbH provides the students with access to their cutting-edge applications as practical examples of CDSS and as an environment for experimentation. Rather than the traditional role of lecturers, our moderators Lena Stoll and Stefan Vogel act as learning advisers supporting a user centered learning experience.

The next iteration of the CDSS course will begin in October 2020 and will be open to HiGHmed partner-site personnel for vocational training.
